Thomas Edward "Ed" Melanson, 88, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, passed away on April 21, 2017 at home surrounded by his family.

Ed was born in Stonington, Connecticut to Samuel A. and Beatrice (Osha) Melanson on February 1, 1929. He attended Stonington High School and following graduation lived for many years in neighboring Westerly, Rhode Island. An engineer by profession, he worked for many years for General Dynamics' Electric Boat division in Groton, Connecticut and subsequently for Booz, Allen, and Hamilton in Newport News, Virginia and Pascagoula, Mississippi before retiring to Florida in 1978.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and served in the United States Army. He was a Freemason and a former Master of Franklin Lodge #20 in Westerly, Rhode Island. During his years in Westerly, he was also a volunteer fireman, a member of the Westerly Lion's Club, served as a deacon at Central Baptist Church, and was active in the Westerly Yacht Club.

Following his retirement, he married Elizabeth Sue Merritt on October 3, 1987 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
In retirement he was active with volunteer work, a member of the Shriner's, and an active member of First Baptist Church of Palm Beach Gardens

Ed is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Todd Allen Melanson, and a stepson, Michael David Merritt.

Ed is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Sue" Melanson, daughters Melanie (Melanson) Lavagnino of Baltimore and Bethany (Melanson) McDow of Bangkok, Thailand, son Robert Edward Melanson, stepson Jon Scott Merritt of Palm Beach Gardens, stepdaughter Deborah (Merritt) Doss, also of Palm Beach Gardens, grandchildren Chelsea, Joshua, Peter, Kyle, Casey, Krista, Courtney, Michael, Michaela, Elizabeth, Kelley, John, Ally, and great-grandchildren Elio, Jentry, Dayton, Daisy, "CJ," Cayden, Krystalyn, Colton, Adrian, Colby, and Joe.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 pm Thursday, April 27th at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 250 Center St., Junpter, FL. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 with Rev. David Linden of First Baptist Church of PBG officiating.
